Emerging artists help shape the dynamic and constantly changing landscape of contemporary art.

Material. Form. Subject brings together the work of five Hamilton and Norfolk County-based emerging artists to consider the enduring relevance of painting as a contemporary art form. Amidst constant proclamations of its death, perhaps no other medium has been as challenged by the shifting definitions of art as painting. Through their practices, artists Sierra Barber, Gabe Baribeau, Chelley Bergen, Stephanie Ionita, and Alexandra Malakhova confront the history of painting. Questioning assumptions about paint as a material, its form and subject, their works reveal the sometimes contradictory ways we experience painting in the 21st century.
