Director, Lynnwood Arts Centre
The Lynnwood Arts Centre is a community-based organization whose Mission Statement is to play a prominent and supportive role within Norfolk County’s arts community. Our Vision is to serve as a dynamic gathering place where community and creativity are celebrated and nurtured. Programming is wide-ranging, focusing on local artists and the community. Our collection, of more than 900 pieces, includes important works by William Kurelek, Tom Hodgson, William Ronald, and Alex Colville.
Summary:
Reporting to the Lynnwood Arts Centre’s Board of Directors, the Director is responsible for managing our strategic direction, leading fundraising planning and execution, and managing financial resources for Lynnwood Arts Centre in conjunction with the Board of Directors. This is a highly collaborative position, responsible for day-to-day operations, working closely with staff, volunteers, program partners, the Board of Directors, and, most importantly, our donor community.
Core Responsibilities:
Strategy
- Development and execution of the long-term Strategic Plan
- Annual Budget planning
Operations and Facilities
- Manage day-to-day operations, including opening hours and visitor reception
- Ensure the facility is well-maintained, including lighting, climate control and security systems
- Maintain documentation and records, including contracts, insurance policies, and board meeting minutes
- Provide oversight and direction to key contractors and staff
- Staff and volunteer recruitment, training and scheduling
Funding and Development
- Design fundraising strategy and set fundraising goals
- Manage membership programs
- Lead Strategic Donor Engagement and identify potential donors and sponsors
- Submission of grant applications from local, provincial and federal programs
- Monitor fundraising effectiveness
Additional Responsibilities:
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be an asset.
Curatorial and Collection Management
- Develop exhibition themes and storylines
- Develop annual events and exhibition plan
- Assess, select, and acquire artworks for shows or the permanent collection
- Develop and engage gallery partnerships and coordinate loan agreements
- Coordinate the installation and removal of exhibits, including display construction, framing, and wall labels
- Arrange for the transport and insurance of objects, whether borrowed or owned. Ensure all curatorial activities adhere to ethical standards and conservation practices.
- Acquisition and de-accession policies
- Classify, catalogue, image, and manage inventory of all artworks
- Oversee the conservation, preservation, and proper storage of the collection
Marketing and Professional Engagement
- Develop and implement marketing strategies and promotional programs, including social media management
- Maintain professional online presence with a gallery website to showcase inventory and events
- Prepare and distribute press releases and newsletters
- Measure the success of events and exhibitions, marketing programs and overall gallery traffic
Programming
- Host events, such as opening receptions and guided tours, to attract visitors and build community interest
- Promote events and exhibitions
- Develop marketing partners for collaborative events
- Develop, market, and coordinate partnership programs that occur within the gallery space (school, clubs, weddings)
- Develop and coordinate community programs such as outreach programs and the Norfolk Studio tour
- Develop and coordinate in gallery events such as Artist talks, Art training, speaker series
- Manage School and university partnerships
Qualifications/Experience:
- 5 years of experience in a similar role for community-based organizations
- 3 years in a management role
- Excellent relationship-building skills
- Excellent writing and presentation skills
- Self-starter with an entrepreneurial mindset
- Arts-focused interests and experience, preferably in a gallery setting
- Experience or knowledge of collection management and handling best practices for a gallery or museum setting.
